Name of the primary parties in a notorious criminal and family court case. In January 2003, a young child was brutally murdered and her sister crippled in an attack by a meth addict in Mesquite, Nevada. The mother of the girls, who had sold fake drugs to the addict, had left the girls unattended while gambling. The mother was the subject of Termination of Parental Rights proceedings on the surviving child, but the Court ruled in her favor and ordered that the child be returned to her. However, the mother's conviction and long sentence on criminal neglect charges virtually assures that the child will never go back to the mother. Many references in news.

Judge Hardcastle's 33-page ruling

This ruling, read by almost no one at the time, provides an interesting summary of the child protective process: Under the law, protecting the parent-child relationship is seen as paramount, even if the parents are deficient. The state has the obligation to work with the parents to repair the deficiency, and the fact that the child is doing well in foster care is not grounds for termination of parental rights.
