Propriator of the Side Bar Deli, the snack bar on the
second floor of the Family Court.
Born in Trona, California (near Death Valley) and
grew up around Ridgecrest, California, where his
family owned a mine. Worked in the beef jerky
business for many years until he started losing his
sight in 1996. It took six months to lose sight in
the right eye and 18 months to lose the left.
He now has only a tiny bit of peripheral vision.
"Just enough to screw you up," he says.
When we first saw Phil he was showing off
his dog Ari in front of the snack bar. "That's
not right," we thought. Dogs shouldn't be allowed
in a courthouse, let alone a food establishment.
It didn't occur to us at the time
that Phil was blind, because he didn't give us any clues.
