Charter was ringmaster of the big Child Haven Publicity Stunt in late 2006. On Sept. 6, the Children's Attorney Project set up a podium in front of Child Haven and held a press conference. (See Review-Journal, 9/7/06External Link - Will open in new window.) They announced that they were going to represent some 60 children housed in Child Haven and local hospitals who had not yet been placed in home care.

Three months later, they announced loudly to the press that they had succeeded! (See Review Journal, 12/26/06External Link - Will open in new window.) Nearly all of the 58 children had been placed.

The only problem is, the CAP program did close to nothing for the kids in the interim. The children got placed or got sent back to their parents because that's what happens to kids in custody, whether or not the CAP program was there to crow about it.

We have documented only two (2) bonafide court appearances by Charter under this loudly announced initiative. (If there were more appearances by Charter or her colleagues, we would like to know how many.) It seems like they spent more time setting up the podium for the press conference than they did in actually representing the children.

Only Stephanie Charter was visible during this silly affair, but the production had Barbara written all over it. This was apparently just a one-shot deal for them—only as long as the press was interested. They are not representing children like that right now, and they usually reject those assignments when requested.

We especially loved the podium in front of Child Haven. It plays so well on TV!
