DCFS managed foster care in Clark County (ineptly) until this function was transferred to the county (DFS) around 2003. Now DCFS continues to provide child welfare services in rural Nevada but is not directly responsible for it in Las Vegas or Reno. (However, the federal government still holds the state responsible for child welfare, so DCFS must still play some sort of oversight role in Clark County, the nature of which is not yet clear.) DCFS runs two youth detention camps—Caliente and Elko—and a youth prison, Summit View (in Las Vegas). It is also responsible for some children's mental health services in Clark County. It contributes some funding to Family Service and Juvenile Justice in Clark County but is not involved in most daily operations.
