A parent may grant a temporary guardianship of their child for up to six months with a hearing. Most other guardianships require a hearing before a hearing master—either in the courthouse or in the hospital with the subject is located.
The majority of guardianships appearing in court involve people who are elderly or otherwise incapacitated and who are unable to care for themselves. In this case, a family member is usually seeking to take control of their relative's affairs and care. These cases are usually uncontested.
Another class of guardianships are contested actions involving juveniles. Typically, this is a grandparent seeking control of their grandchildren due to the parents' alleged drug use. In effect, it is an alternative child welfare avenue, bypassing DFS. (However, once a case becomes a DFS matter, then guardianships must be approved by them.)
In Family Court, guardianships are signified by a "G" in the case number.
