You may think of marriage as the joining of two hearts, but under the law it is only the merging of two pocketbooks. Marriage creates a joint corporation that shares all subsequently acquired assets. Once you are married, you may think you have kept your own bank account, but legally it is now your partner's bank account as well, which you will find out when you are divorced.

You may think of marriage as a parenting contract, but this is also false. The true parenting contract is the birth certificate and the names that appear upon it. Marriage grants no additional rights or responsibilities beyond this.
