SMYC is not a locked facility, but it is highly structured, similar to a military camp. Inmates are supervised at all times—but by "Probation Officers", not "guards." Technically, it is not a detention facility but a probation facility. Youths are assigned to the camp as part of their probation for criminal offenses. Typically, the first six months of their probation is spent at Spring Mountain, followed by 12 months of traditional probation in Las Vegas.
The area gets significant snowfall in the winter. About one-fifth of the inmates participate in a forestry program where they help maintain the trails at nearby Mt. Charleston.

Approaching the camp.

Seen from the approach road.

Seen from the water tower on the west.

Seen from the road to Angel Peak.

Two unidentified buildings, relics from the
Air Force days. The building in the foreground
may be the school (unconfirmed).

The five dorms are housed in three green-roofed buildings.
The Forestry dorm is the separate building on the
left. Lucero and Wilson dorms are in the middle
building. Cohen and Zenoff dorms are in the
building on the right.

Interior of the Zenoff dorm, which is identical to
three other dorms. It houses 20 boys: 10 on the
upper level, and 10 on the lower. A Probation
Officer at a central desk can see every location
in the building, including the rest rooms, which
are in the middle of the photo. (Photo taken with
permission. The Probation Officer ordered the
inmates to face the television.)

Close-up of TV area and rest rooms.

A typical "room". Inmates make their own beds,
obviously to high standards.

The bathroom facilities. Shower stalls are about
4 feet high. There are no doors on the toilet
stalls.

Another rest room.

The dining hall. It will eventually be replaced
by a newly built facility.

The football field is located about 1/4 mile from
the camp. It is newly built by a private donor.

Vegas Sun article.

This is Friday afternoon. The charter bus is here
to take well-behaved inmates to Las Vegas for
weekend furlough.
